Douala

6 APRIL 2023

I moved to the Foyer du Marin today; a mission establishment intent on providing seaman with a land based retreat of humanity when they dock in Douala port.

It has a wonderful terrace and excellent restaurant. The managers, Karin and Marcus have lovingly restored it to its former beauty and functionality.

Its Maundy Thursday and the cathedral in the city is full. The religious leaders and associates are all inside the building whilst the congregation gather outside under canopies. The singing is wonderful to listen to

I visited the Bonanjo area of Douala today and spotted examples of old colonial German architecture.

Doual'Art is the main contemporary art space in the city and is currently exhibiting "Gaia must survive" by Ruth Afane Belinga; she explores themes of rape, manhood and domination, the impact of industrialisation, deforestation and exploitation.

It was here that I met Koko Komegne and learnt about the development of the art movement from the 90s onwards.
