Bureh beach

6 January 2023

I moved on to Bureh beach to stay at Lumthubul Garden beach resort, travelling by motorbike along the coast road.

Owned by Christine and managed by a team leader and staff from the adjacent Bureh village, this is a popular place for NGOs and medical staff seeking respite from their jobs around Sierra Leone. I stayed in a wooden cottage overlooking the beach for Le550,000. The food was fantastic - breakfast for Le60,000 and dinner mains for LE150,000.

It was wonderful to soak up the sound of the sea, walk the beach, watch the fishermen and generally take some time to rest and process everything. Christine also kept me updated about the daily occurrences at the resort and her ongoing opposition to the sand mining activities. During my time there, one of the workers had brought in a baby rat after someone in the village had killed its mother for meat. She also pointed out the sand mine to the north of her property and the impact this was having on the erosion of the beach and the protection this offered her property. Christine was also involved in trying to persuade the next resort to turn down the loud music which began in the evening and was on again next morning. It seems that she is now involved in many challenges that are impacting on the future success of her business. As a key local employer, she feels responsible to keep the clients happy, the business sustained and the property maintained, into the future.
