Lubango

8 MAY 2023

I've had another of those special memorable days today. I decided to hire a taxi to take me to some of the geographical sites on the outskirts of Lubango; The Serra da Leba, the statue of Christ the King and the Tundavala.

Cristo Rei (Christ the King)

The most famous Christ the King statue known is the Brazilian one in Rio de Janeiro, but it isn’t the only one. Apparently, this is a Portuguese thing; there is a “Cristo-Rei” in Almada, Lisbon, and Angola has its own in the former Portuguese colony of Lubango. The statue is 30 meters high and is situated on top of the hill overlooking the city.

On top of the hill, you also have a fantastic viewpoint of the city of Lubango and its surroundings. Next to the statue, there are the giant letters saying LUBANGO in Hollywood style.

It was here that I saw the second cluster of nomads from the south Angola desert. They sit close to the statue in the hope of getting a bit of money from passing tourists.

Fenda da Tundavala (Tundavala Gap)

Fenda da Tundavala, or Gap of Tundavala, is an enormous abyss in the mountain of Serra da Leba located 18 km from Lubango. The mountain plateau has 2200 mt of altitude and suddenly falls 1000 mt, creating an abyss between the mountains. It looks like somebody cut a slice into the mountain. This natural abyss promotes stunning views. It is one of the seven wonders of Angola. Around this area you see many cattle and goats; it's popular grazing land for the herds men.
