Mbeya

25 February 2024

I had a smooth crossing across the border into Tanzania today and was issued a visa on entry. On route I came through the flooded lands of northern Malawi. Whole villages were under water following heavy rain.

I joined the villagers on the higher land where the road was - they waited patiently for the water to recede and to resume their lives.

Tanzania was green and lush. The road wound through mountainous terrain devoid of visible habitation. I stopped in the town of Mbeya which sits in the gap between the verdant Mbeya range and the Poroto Mountains. The town was founded in 1927 as a supply centre for the gold rush at Lupa to the north and now owes its status as a major trade and transport hub for Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi. I stayed at a wonderful relaxed Indian owned motel and relished the cooler climate and delicious Asian food.
