Tofo

4 February 2024

A destination for Maputo tourists and visitors from South Africa, Tofo has a long tradition as a laid back beach location. Spread out on a peninsula of land by the sea, the village is predominately built from foreigners’ money invested in lodges and villas.  I found it to be quiet and rundown with a ‘out of season’ feel.

I shared the backpacker’s location with a Dutch family  - it was delightfully peaceful, quiet and truly laid back.

The centre of Tofo town is further inland and has a curious faded grandeur of yesteryears. The 1930s buildings of European design stand amongst the more recent developments. When I visited, the streets were quiet and the only bustling area was the central market and bus station.
